March 23, 2011
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Hall of Champions announced Wednesday its Fab 50 basketball and winter season Olympic sports lists to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the creation of the CIF San Diego Section, which started in 1960. Several current and former Aztecs made the lists, which recognized their accomplishments during both their prep careers in San Diego County and afterwards.
Current San Diego State student-athletes to make the list include women's basketball player Paris Johnson (San Diego High), who finished her career earlier this month as the program's all-time blocks leader, and men's soccer midfielder Jose Altamirano (Southwest High), who led the team in assists as a sophomore in 2010. Aztec men's basketball standout James Rahon (Torrey Pins High) was also among those earning mention.
Other basketball players earning a spot on the top-50 list or receiving votes include recent SDSU players Richie Williams (Steele Canyon High), Tyrone Shelley (Crawford High), Allison Duffy (El Capitan High) and Jerica Williams (Mount Miguel High). In addition, former Aztecs Mohamed Abukar (Rancho Bernardo High), Steve Copp (Hilltop High), Joel Kramer (Patrick Henry High), Courtie Miller (Torrey Pines High) and Graig Nettles (San Diego High) earned mention to make SDSU well represented among all-time CIF San Diego Section greats.
In boys soccer, Gilbert Sanchez (Montgomery High), Aaron Susi (Mission Bay High) and Chugger Adair (Hilltop High) were each recognized for their high school playing careers, while Holly Hartzell (Fallbrook High) was named to the girls' water polo list.
