SAN DIEGO - Four San Diego State student-athletes have been named Breitbard Stars of the Month on behalf of the San Diego Hall of Champions for the second quarter of 2007. Aztec water polo's Stacy Werner and baseball's Stephen Strasburg received April accolades, while softball's Brittany Knudsen and baseball's Nick Romero were honored for the month of May.
Werner, who was named second-team All-America by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC), led the Aztecs with 95 steals, while her 48 assists and 66 goals ranked second and third, respectively. A senior, Werner tallied at least one goal in 36 of 39 matches, including a 21-game scoring streak to end the season. A second-team all-MPSF performer, she concluded her collegiate career ranked among San Diego State's all-time leaders in steals (2nd, 249), assists (4th, 119) and goals (6th, 148).
Strasburg was named a 2007 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball magazine after recording seven saves and a 2.43 earned run average. His save total was second-best in the conference and tied for the seventh-most in a season by an SDSU pitcher. For his efforts, Strasburg earned 2007 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America honors by Collegiate Baseball magazine, MWC co-Freshman of the Year and was an all-MWC second-team selection.
Knudsen, a freshman, was named to the 2007 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I all-West Region second team after recording one of the best seasons in SDSU history. An all-MWC selection, Knudsen ranked among the school single-season leaders in on-base percentage (2nd, .464), batting average (3rd, .386), runs (3rd, 39) and walks (3rd, 24). In addition, she posted top-10 single-season marks in slugging percentage (5th, .524), hits (T-5th, 64), total bases (T-5th, 87) and home runs (T-7th, 4).
Romero was named a first-team all-MWC selection after earning second-team honors as a freshman in 2006. He batted .365 in league play with 20 runs scored and 25 RBI in 24 contests. He finished among the top 10 in five offensive categories in conference game statistics.
