Kona, Hawai'i - For the second day in a row, San Diego State split games in a doubleheader against Hawai'i-Hilo, winning the first contest and dropping the second. On Sunday, the twin bill was played at Simmons Field in Kona, as SDSU took the opener, 9-2, then dropped the nightcap, 5-3. The results left SDSU with a record of 2-2 after its first four games of the season while UHH's record now stands at 4-7.

In the seven-inning opener, the Aztecs found themselves facing a 2-0 deficit after four innings and were being held hitless by Vulcan starter Scott Siegfried. The UHH right-hander allowed only one base runner (on an error) over the first four frames.

In the fifth, SDSU's Chad Corona and Brian Kinsman drew walks, and with two outs center fielder David Hall broke up the no-hitter with an RBI double to left center cut the deficit to 2-1. Hall went 2-for-3 in the contest with three runs batted in.

One inning later, the Aztecs took a 4-2 lead, scoring three times on RBI singles by Jake McLintock and Rielly Embrey, plus a bases-loaded walk to Hall. They then put the game away with five runs in the seventh with RBIs from Hall, McLintock, Landon Burt, Brock Ungricht and Sam Pepper.

Aztec senior right-hander Chris Hartshorn went the distance, striking out six. After giving up two runs in the first three innings, he allowed only one hit over the final four. Vulcan freshman Kyle Neuberger (0-1) was saddled with the loss, his first decision of the season.

In game two, SDSU jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the second inning. A bases-loaded walk to Ryan Wilson plus sacrifice flies from Garret Changnon and James Guerrero accounted for the Aztec RBIs.

San Diego State senior Drew Jenson, making his first career start at SDSU, sailed through the first two innings, but ran into trouble in the third giving up a walk and three straight hits as UHH made it a one-run game at 3-2.

The Vulcans took the lead for good in the sixth when they scored a pair of runs on two walks, a sacrifice fly, and an RBI single. One run was credited to Jenson with the go-ahead marker coming at the expense of reliever Jeff Teasley. UHH added an insurance run in the seventh as Teasley was tagged with the loss to fall to 0-1.

The Aztecs had only five hits in the game, with two coming of the bat of right fielder Jake McLintock. The junior form Bonita finished the day with three hits and three runs batted in, and is hitting .438 (7-for-16) with six RBI's after the first four games of the season.

Hawai'i-Hilo's Austin Tobin (1-0) got the win after pitching the middle five innings and allowing only two hits and a walk. Usui picked up the save, his second of the season with both coming against SDSU.

San Diego State and Hawai'i-Hilo conclude their five-game series with a single game on Monday (Jan. 26) at Simmons Field in Kona beginning at noon.
