Box Score

San Diego - San Diego State scored eight times over the first two innings en route to a 13-8 victory over University of San Diego at Cunningham Stadium Tuesday afternoon. Along the way, the Aztec offense collected a season-high 21 hits and Ben Coon picked up his fourth win of the season with an eight-inning effort.

The Aztecs (19-23) opened with a pair of runs in the first on a two-out RBI single by Garrett Cook that scored Anthony Gwynn and James Guerrero from second and third. They added six more in their next at bat with the big blows being a bases-loaded triple by Josh Allen and a two-run homer by Cook to take an 8-0 lead.

After getting through the first two innings with relative ease, Coon saw his eight-run cushion evaporate as the home side scored twice in the third and four times in the fourth to suddenly make it an 8-6 contest. However, he settled down and retired the side in order in both the fifth and sixth innings

SDSU increased its lead with a pair of runs in the seventh on RBI singles by Jake McLintock and Gwynn. After the Toreros (22-25) got one back in their half of the inning, the Aztecs put the game away with three in the eighth, getting RBIs from Chad Corona, Ryan Wilson, and Gwynn once again.

With the win, Coon, a freshman lefty from Grossmont High, improved to 4-3 on the year. USD starter Brett Gillespie, the first of seven pitchers used by the Toreros, took the loss to fall to 0-4.

All nine of San Diego State's starters hit safely on the day and eight of the nine scored at least once. Cook, one of four Aztecs with three hits, had a triple, homer and four runs batted in while Gwynn, Allen and McLintock also reached safely three times apiece.

Up next for the Aztecs is a three-game Mountain West Conference series at Air Force beginning Friday (April 25) at 2:00 p.m. (MDT) in Colorado Springs. That contest can be heard live on the Internet at www.goaztecs.com with Alan Horton's pregame show starting 10 minutes prior to game time.
