Box Score

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State scored a run in the first inning, and Aztec pitchers Daryl Harang and Ryan Schroyer made it stand up as the Aztecs defeated New Mexico, 1-0, Saturday afternoon at Tony Gwynn Stadium. With the win, SDSU saw its record improve to 24-24 overall and 12-6 in Mountain West Conference play as it moved past the Lobos into second place in the league standings. The Lobos dropped to 17-23-1 (13-7 MWC).

In the bottom of the opening frame, SDSU center fielder led off with a triple to right center and came home on an RBI ground out to shortstop off the bat of James Guerrero. From that point, both Lobo starter Danny Ray Herrera and Harang kept the opposing offenses in check.

Herrera (3-5) went 7.1 innings, allowing seven hits while striking out six and walking two. Harang (4-4), meanwhile, pitched eight innings, giving up six hits with no walks and six strikeouts.

Aztec closer Ryan Schroyer came on to pitch the final inning and had some anxious moments before closing out the contest to record his 10th save of the year.

In that Lobo ninth, Joe Salas led off with single, and with one out pinch hitter Garrick Haymore was hit by pitch to put runners on first and second. A wild pitch sent Salas to third and brought up right fielder Chris Dabbs. With Haymore breaking for second, Dabbs struck out on a 2-2 pitch and the runner was ruled out on batter interference to end the contest on an unusual double play.

SDSU's Burt (triple, single) and third baseman Brock Ungricht (single, double) finish with two hits apiece while Salas had a pair of singles for the visitors.

The Lobos and Aztecs conclude their three-game series Sunday afternoon (May 2) when they square off at noon at Tony Gwynn Stadium. Fans that hear that game live or follow it on the text Gametracker at www.goaztecs.com.
