Box Score

SAN DIEGO - Jomel Torres led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run and the Aztecs never looked back as they rolled to an 11-0 win over New Mexico in the opener of their three-game conference series at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The SDSU offense was complemented by another standout performance on the mound by junior right-hander Addison Reed.

The win pushed the Aztecs over the .500 mark at 22-21 as they improved to 7-6 in the Mountain West Conference. The Lobos, who were shut out for the first time since April 17, 2009, fell to 28-15 overall and 10-5 in league play.

After Torres opened the scoring with the solo homer in the first, the Aztec got to Lobo starter Bobby Mares for another run in the second when Torres' two-out single drove home Chris Wilson, who had walked and advanced to second on a ground out to third.

In the next frame San Diego State put four more runs on the board to make it a 6-0 game as Wilson capped off the rally with a two-run homer to left center. It was his team-leading sixth of the season as he would finish the night with two hits and three RBI. That offensive outburst also meant the end of the evening for Mares, who would suffer his first loss of the season and fall to 3-1.

Reed, meanwhile, was keeping the New Mexico offense in check as he allowed just four hits over eight innings to a team that came into the contest with a .352 batting average. Along the way he struck out nine and walked only one as he improved to 7-1 on the season. Only two of the eight base runners he allowed advanced as far as second base as Reed extended his scoreless inning streak to 20.

The Aztecs put the game away with five runs in the bottom of the eighth that came on six hits and a pair of walks. Cory Vaughn had a two-run double in the frame while SDSU also scored on base hits by Brandon Meredith, Chris Wilson and Blake Silguero.

Junior lefty Ryan Wynveen came out of the bullpen to open the top of the ninth and retired the side in order to nail down the win.

Five Aztecs turned in two-hit efforts in the contest. In addition to Wilson and Torres, the threesome of Mitch Blackburn, Cory Vaughn and Ryan O'Sullivan also reached twice safely. Blackburn's double in the third innings kept his current hitting streak alive at 22 games.

San Diego State and New Mexico will continue their three-game weekend series with a contest on Saturday, May, 1, at 6:00 p.m. (PT). That game will be televised live on TheMtn network
