Baseball Picked Second In MW Preseason Poll

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The San Diego State baseball team has been picked to finish second in the Mountain West in 2013 according to a vote of the six conference head coaches. In addition, second baseman Tim Zier had been named to the pre-season all-conference squad.
Defending Mountain West champion New Mexico has been predicted to win its second consecutive regular season MW baseball title after receiving five first-place votes and 35 points overall. San Diego State received the remaining first-place vote and 26 points to edge out MW newcomers Nevada (23 points) and Fresno State (22 points) for second place. UNLV was picked fifth (13 points), followed by Air Force in sixth (7 points).
San Diego State (26-34, 12-12 MW) returns 24 letterwinners, including 11 pitchers in 2013. All-MW Tournament performers Tim Zier (2B) and Greg Allen (OF) along with pitcher Michael Cederoth are among the top returning starters for head coach Tony Gwynn. The Aztecs finished the season as the runner-up in the 2012 MW Tournament.
The coaches also selected their preseason all-conference team with Aztec second baseman Tim Zier the lone representative from SDSU. Zier is coming off a season in which he hit .318 with 11 doubles and 10 stolen bases.
San Diego State's 2013 campaign gets underway next Friday (Feb. 15) with a contest at the University of San Diego at 7:00 p.m. Following the three-game weekend series at USD, the Aztecs will open their home season on Thursday, Feb. 21, against sixth-ranked Oregon State at 6:00 p.m.
