Aztecs Baseball Voted Mountain West Co-Favorites

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The San Diego State baseball team has been picked as co-favorite with New Mexico to capture the Mountain West title in 2014 according to a vote of the seven conference head coaches. In addition, second baseman Tim Zier and center fielder Greg Allen have been named to the pre-season all-conference squad.
The Aztecs received three-first-place votes and totaled 43 points as did UNM to top this year's poll. The remaining first-place vote went to UNLV, which picked third with 40 points. Fresno State was fourth with 25 points followed in order by Nevada (19), Air Force (14) and San Jose State (12).
Zier, an all-conference selection a year ago, is the Aztecs' leading returning offensive player after batting .341 last season with 14 doubles, 41 RBI and 18 stolen bases. Allen, who was named to eh all-tourney team at the NCAA Regional and the Mountain West Tournament, led SDSU in runs scored (51) walks (36) and stolen bases (25) in 2013.
San Diego State returns 23 letterwinners including seven position starters and a 11 pitchers in 2013. In addition to Zier and Allen, the Aztecs finished also return a pair Freshman All-Americans in third baseman Ty France and pitcher Bubba Derby along with al-conference second-team honoree Ryan Muno (1B) and all-MW Tournament selection Mike Robards (LHP).
San Diego State will get its 2014 campaign underway with a three-game series at San Jose State this weekend. The season opener comes on Friday, Feb. 14, at 6:00 p.m. at Municipal Stadium in San Jose. This will mark the first time in program history that the Aztecs will begin their season with conference play.
Following the three-game weekend series at San Jose State, SDSU will open its home season on Tuesday, Feb. 18, against Loyola Marymount at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
