Baseball Tabbed Second in MW Preseason Poll

Feb. 13, 2018

SAN DIEGO – Fresh off its fourth Mountain West Tournament Championship in the last five years, the San Diego State baseball team was picked to finish second in the MW for the upcoming 2018 season by a vote of the league's head coaches. Senior shortstop David Hensley and sophomore right-handed pitcher Logan Boyer were also named to the 2018 all-MW preseason team.

The Aztecs enter 2018 as the only team in the nation to have won four conference tournament championships in the last five seasons. In the poll, New Mexico was selected as the preseason favorites to win the MW by a slim margin, garnering three first-place votes and 31 overall points – just ahead of SDSU’s two first-place votes and 29 overall points.

The poll is rounded out with Fresno State (24 points, one first-place vote), Nevada (22 points), UNLV (21, one first-place vote), Air Force (11 points) and San Jose State (nine points).

Hensley, the team’s leading hitter from a year ago with a .357 batting average, is expected to be SDSU’s opening day shortstop after seeing action at the corner infield and outfield positions in 2017. Hensley particularly thrived in MW play, hitting a team-best .398 against conference opponents. Among SDSU returners, Hensley ranks fourth in 2017 home runs (three) and third in RBI (31).

Boyer, who is expected to be SDSU’s Friday night starter in the team’s opener against UC Santa Barbara, saw limited action in his freshman campaign due to injury, however, shined in summer ball, recording a 1.60 ERA in 12 appearances and 33.2 innings pitched for the Anchorage Bucs of the Alaska Baseball League. Boyer led all ABL pitchers with 50 strikeouts on the year and was ranked the fourth best prospect in the ABL by Baseball America. During his freshman season on the Mesa, Boyer recorded similar numbers in limited innings with a 1.46 ERA over 10 appearances and 12.1 innings pitched.

The Aztecs return 16 players from the 2017 squad while welcoming 18 newcomers, split between 15 freshmen - tied for the team's largest freshmen class since 2011 - and three junior college transfers. The 2017 recruiting class was ranked No. 14 in the nation by Perfect Game and features nine California high school players who ranked in the top 10 of their respective positions for class of 2017 players in California.

SDSU opens its 2018 slate Friday, Feb. 16, at home against UC Santa Barbara with first pitch at 6:00 p.m.
