WHAT'S ON TAP THIS WEEK IN AZTEC BASEBALL
San Diego State returns to the road this week for a four-game series at 16th-ranked Arkansas. The opener between the Aztecs and Razorbacks is scheduled for Thursday, March 7, at 6:00 p.m. (CT) at UA's Baum Stadium. The teams will also meet in single games on Friday (March 8 at 3:00 p.m. CT), Saturday (March 9 at 11:30 a.m. CT) and Sunday (March 10 at 12:00 p.m. CT).
San Diego State has won only one of its previous five meetings with Arkansas. The first game between the teams came in 2001 at the Hormel Foods Classic in Minneapolis with the Razorbacks claiming a 6-4 victory. The clubs also played a four-game series at Tony Gwynn Stadium during the 2011 season with Arkansas winning three of those contests.
ALLEN ON THE OFFENSIVE
Sophomore center fielder Greg Allen hit safely in a five games last week going 10-for-23 (.435) with seven runs scored and five runs batted in. He turned in his second four-hit effort of the young season last Wednesday (Feb. 27) in the 7-4 win at Santa Clara. He also had four RBI in that contest with a pair of bases-loaded singles. Allen scored three times in each of SDSU's first two games vs. Seton Hall. He recorded his first assist of the year from center field when he threw out a Seton Hall runner at the plate with the core tired 3-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning in a game won 4-3 by the Aztecs. He leads the team in hits (18), runs (13) and stolen bases (5).
COLLEGE SPORTS MADNESS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
College Sports Madness has named San Diego State outfielder Greg Allen the CSM Mountain West Baseball Player of the Week for his exceptional performance during last week's action. In addition to hitting .435 for the week, he also had a .500 on-base percentage, stole three bases and was perfect in the outfield on 19 chances.
ROMANSKI HITS AWAY
Catcher Jake Romanski was solid at the plate as he hit safely in all five of the Aztecs' games last week. In those contests he went 9-for-17 (.529) with a double, three runs scored and three stolen bases. He also drew four walks and was hit by pitch once for a .636 on-base percentage for the week. Romanski currently owns the team's longest hitting streak at nine games. During the streak he has hit .432 (14-for-32) with three doubles.
Freshman closer Bubba Derby recorded his fourth save of the season in the win against Seton Hall on Tuesday, March 3. He tossed the final 1.1 innings of that contest allowing no runs on a hit with one strikeout. Derby has made a total of six relief appearances this season covering 9.0 innings with 13 of his 27 outs coming via the strikeout. His four saves is tied for first in the Mountain West.
SPIRK HEATS UP
John Spirk has hit safely in each of SDSU's last seven games, going 9-for-25 (.360) with a double, two runs scored and six RBI. His current seven-game hitting streak is second-best on the squad. Spirk has appeared in eight games this season, going hitless in only one contest (vs. Oregon State Feb. 21) when he had one at-bat as a pinch hitter.
NATIONAL STAT LEADERS
As a team, San Diego state ranks among the top 50 in the nation in four categories. There are currently a total fo 295 teams playing Division I baseball. That list included stolen bases (18 - 43rd), double plays (13 - 10th), double plays per nine innings (1.17 - 21st) and fielding percentage (.980 - 22nd). Individually, Bubba Derby ranks sixth in the nation in saves with four and Philip Walby is 37th in hits allowed per nine innings (4.5). In addition, Greg Allen has scored 13 runs to rank 51st in that category.
Freshman third baseman Tyler France hit the Aztecs' first home run of the year in last Saturday's (March 2) game against Seton Hall. That remains the only home run hit by San Diego State through the first 12 games of the season. Conversely, foes have hit only one home run as well with that coming at Santa Clara on Feb. 27.
Sophomore pitcher Michael Cederoth has struck out six batters in each of his three starts this season ... Pitcher Philip Walby's .148 opponent batting average ranks second in the Mountain West this week ... Evan Potter went 4-for-8 with a double and two RBI in the final two games of the series vs. Seton Hall last weekend (March 2-3) ... Tim Zier had a four-game hitting streak end in the series finale vs. Seton Hall (March 3), his second four-game streak of the season ... Aztec pinch hitters are 1-for-4 (.250) after the first two weeks of the season. Opponents have gone 3-for-15 (.200) ... The Aztecs have caught 12 of 24 runners attempting to steal this season. Catcher Brad Haynal has nabbed 5-of-8 while Jake Romanski has caught 5-of-14 ... First baseman Ryan Muno suffered a broken hand during practice three weeks ago and is expected to miss 2-3 more weeks. Muno went 4-for-13 (.308) during the opening weekend of the season ... Tim Zier is hitting .467 (7-for-15) with runners in scoring position while John Spirk is at .455 (5-for-11) ... The Aztecs have scored in the first inning in three of their last four games
