Thornton Named MW Baseball Player of the Week

Spencer Thornton earned his first conference Player of the Week award for his performance over last week's four contests.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State sophomore outfielder Spencer Thornton has earned Mountain West Baseball Player of the Week honors for games played from March 10-16, 2014. He helped San Diego State to a 4-0 week, including a three wins against Purdue over the weekend.

For the week Thornton (Alta Loma, Calif. / Los Osos HS) hit for an average of .533 with eight hits, seven runs scored and eight RBI over the four-game stretch. His slugging percentage for the week was .933, while he got on base at a .562 clip.

He began the week by going 2-for-4 with a sacrifice bunt and three runs scored in a 12-0 shutout at Cal State Northridge on Tuesday, March 11.

In the opener of the series vs. Purdue on March 14, he was a pinch hitter in the 8-7 win over the Boilermakers, getting on base with a walk.

Thornton started Saturday's 11-2 victory over Purdue in the outfield and was 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored, one triple and three RBI. He singled and scored in the fourth inning for the Aztecs' first run of the game and followed up in the fifth with a bases-loaded triple to break a 2-2 tie and give SDSU a 5-2 lead.

In Sundays contest he went 3-for-6 in the series finale, an 18-3 win vs. Purdue, with two runs scored, a double, a homerun and a career-high five RBI. His three-run home run in the sixth inning was the first of his SDSU career.

San Diego State will conclude its four-game home series against Purdue with a contest Monday night at 6:00 p.m. prior to resuming Mountain West play this weekend at league-leading UNLV.
