Zavala Named MW Baseball Player of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State sophomore outfielder Seby Zavala has earned Mountain West Baseball Player of the Week honors for games played from March 24-30, 2014. He helped San Diego State to a 4-1 week, including series wins against Santa Clara and Fresno State.
For the week Zavala (West Covina, Calif. / Bishop Amat HS) hit for an average of .412 with seven hits including a double, three runs scored and two RBI over the five-game stretch. His slugging percentage for the week was .471 while he got on base at a .476 clip.
Zavala hit safely in all five of SDSU's games during the week. He recorded two hits and scored a run in the series-openng win over Santa Clara last Tuesday. In the 4-3 win over the Broncos on Wednesday, he had the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to break a 3-3 tie.
In the win over Fresno State on Friday, Zavala singled and scored SDSU's second (and game-winning) run in the bottom of the eighth in the 2-1 win over the Bulldogs. He also drew two walks in that contest.
In Saturday's loss to Fresno State, Zavala had two hits including a double and scored once. In the series finale vs. the Bulldogs he recorded one hit and also reached on a hit by pitch. Over the five games last week he did not commit an error in eight chances in left field.
San Diego State will travel across town on Tuesday (Apr. 1) to take on the University of San Diego at 6:00 p.m. at Fowler Park prior to resuming Mountain West play this weekend by hosting a three-game series vs. Air Force.
