Complete Release and Season Statistics WHAT'S ON TAP THIS WEEK IN AZTEC BASEBALL
San Diego State continues Mountain West road action this weekend with a three-game series against UNLV in Las Vegas, Nev., that gets underway on Friday (April 19) at 6:00 p.m. (PT) at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. The teams will also meet for contests on Saturday (April 20) and Sunday (April 21) at 2:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. (PT) respectively.
SDSU's record against UNLV over the years stands at 69-47. The teams first met in 1978 and were members of the Western Athletic Conference together for 19 years before moving to the Mountain West for the 2000 baseball season. The Aztecs have won 20 of the last 23 against the Rebels over the past four seasons including taking two of three close contests in San Diego the weekend of March 22-24 this season. SDSU is 34-15 vs. UNLV in San Diego, 34-28 in Las Vegas and 1-4 at neutral sites.
ROMANSKI GETS ON
After having a streak of reaching base safely (via hit, walk or hit by pitch) in 14 straight games come to an end at Long Beach State on April 9, Jake Romanski hit safely in all three games at Air Force last weekend (April 12-14). During the three games in Colorado Springs he went 5-for-13 (.385) with a triple, four runs scored and four RBI. The triple was his first as an Aztec. Romanski has thrown out five of the last eight runners (and 8 of the last 14) trying to steal when he is behind the plate.
ZIER STREAK ENDS
Second baseman Tim Zier had an 11-game hitting streak end in the series finale at Air Force on April 14. During that streak he went 20-for-44 (.454) with three doubles, a home run, 11 runs scored and nine RBI. The 11-game streak tied for longest by an Aztec this season with the other being accomplished by Jake Romanski. Zier did walk in that game on April 14 to extend his steak of reaching base safely (via, hit, walk of hit by pitch) to 14 games. His home run in the contest on April 13 was his first as an Aztec.
Greg Allen is on a six-game hitting streak during which he has gone 11-for-35 (.314) with seven runs scored and seven RBI. Allen has reached base safely (via hit, walk or hit by pitch) in each of the last 17 games, the longest such streak by an Aztec this season. He is third on the squad in multiple-hit games with nine. He leads the team in runs (29), walks (16) and steals (11). He is tied for the conference lead in steals heading into this weekend's action at UNLV.
MUNO HEATS UP
First baseman Ryan Muno has a six-game hitting streak in progress. He has driven in at least one run in four of the last five games (seven RBI total). He connected for his first home run of the season on Monday, April 1, vs. UC Riverside, a three-run shot deep over the left field fence at Tony Gwynn Stadium. He has not committed an error at first base this season in 18 games (153 chances).
MUÑOZ GETS ON
Outfielder Matt Muñoz has hit safely in each of his last six games going 7-for-18 (.389) with a double, four RBI and five runs scored. He is 2-for-2 as a pinch hitter this season, most recently recording an RBI single in that role at Air Force last Saturday (April 13).
FRANCE GETS OFFENSIVE
Freshman third baseman Ty France is on a six-game hitting streak going 9-for-25 (.360) with two doubles, four RBI and a run scored. His longest hitting streak of the season has been eight games (March 15-28).
POTTER COMING ON
Shortstop Evan Potter has hit safely in each of the past five games going 6-for-18 (.333) with seven runs scored and two RBI. He has scored at least once in each of the Aztecs' last five games. He has stolen a base in four of his last five contests and ranks third on the team in that category with nine on the season. He has struck out only once in the past seven games (23 plate appearances)
ENTERING THE RECORD BOOK
Ty France has been hit by pitch eight times this season, a figure that ties for 20th in the Aztec record book. Evan Potter's nine sacrifice bunts ties for 10th in the all-time SDSU listing. Tim Zier's eight sac bunts ties for 20th. On the SDSU career list, Potter's 22 sac bunts rank fifth while Zier's 14 career sac bunts are tied for 18th. Brad Haynal has 13 career hit by pitch to tie for 19th on the all-time last.
As a team, San Diego state ranks among the top 50 in the nation in two categories. There are currently a total of 295 teams playing Division I baseball. That list includes strikeouts per nine innings (7.8 - 41st) and fielding percentage (.976 - 26th). Individually, Michael Cederoth ranks 15th in strikeouts (69), 27th in strikeouts per nine innings pitched (10.35) and 47th in hits per nine inning pitched (6.15). Bubba Derby ranks 38th in the nation in saves with seven and Ryan Doran is 38th in wins with six. In addition, Evan Potter ranks 31st in sacrifice bunts with nine.
SDSU's .976 fielding percentage is among the best-ever for an Aztec squad. The school season record is .974 set by the 2009 team ... The 2-0 win over Nevada April 5 was the first (and only) time in 16 contests this season that SDSU has won when scoring three or fewer runs ... Freshman right-hander Tyler Sapp made his first collegiate start a good one as he went seven innings allowing one run on three hits with two walk and seven strikeouts over seven innings in a no-decision at UC Riverside on April 2 ... Tim Zier leads the team with eight multiple-RBI games followed by Ty France with six ... Michael Cederoth's .199 opponent batting average ranks first in the conference this week while Philip Walby's mark of .229 is sixth.
