Aztecs Open Three-Game Series at UC Santa Barbara This Afternoon

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - San Diego State takes a break from Mountain West play as it visits UC Santa Barbara for a the-game series that gets underway this afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at the Gauchos’ Caesar Uyesaka Stadium. It marks the first meeting between the teams since the Aztecs defeated UCSB, 4-3, at the 2015 NCAA Regional in Lake Elsinore.
UC Santa Barbara enters the weekend with a record of 16-18 after taking two of three from UC Irvine last weekend and winning at Pepperdine on Tuesday. The Gauchos are led offensively by second baseman Colton Burns (.359, 3 HR, 11 RBI, third baseman Kenny Corey (.337, 5 2B, 17 RBI) and right fielder Armani Smith (.316, 7 2B, 15 RBI). First baseman Austin Bush leads the club with eight doubles, seven home runs and 29 RBI. UCSB is hitting .279 as a team with a 4.78 earned run average.
UCSB will send right-hander Noah Davis (6-3, 4.98) to the mound to start this afternoon’s contest. The Aztecs will counter with junior right-hander Jorge Fernandez, who will be making just his fourth start of the season.
Aztec junior right fielder David Hensley was named the Mountain West Player of the Week for his performance in four games during the week of April 9-16. Over those four games he hit .647 (11-for-17) with a double, triple, home run, six RBI and seven runs scored.
Second baseman Alan Trejo has been stellar both at the plate and on the mound in 2017. Over the last six games he is hitting .520 (13-for-25) with a double, home run, seven RBI and eight runs scored. He has also made 10 appearances on the mound this season and is 1-1 with one save and a 1.38 ERA.
Outfielder Chase Calabuig has hit safely in 12 of SDSU’s last 13 games. He has the team’s longest current hitting streak at eight games. During that streak he is hitting .412 (14-for-34) with a double, two home runs, six RBI and six runs scored. Over SDSU’s past 11 games he is hitting .400 (18-for-45) with three doubles and two home runs.
Over the last 16 contests in which SDSU has posted a 12-4 mark, the Aztecs are hitting .332 to .241 by opponent. They also have a team ERA of 2.76 while opponents’ ERA is 7.25.
San Diego State and UC Santa Barbara will continue their weekend series with a game on Saturday (April 22) at 2:00 p.m. PT in Santa Barbara.
