WHAT'S ON TAP THIS WEEKEND IN AZTEC BASEBALL
After it's mid-week victory at UC Riverside this past Tuesday (May 7), San Diego State will now resume conference play as it returns home to host Air Force for a three-game series that gets underway on Friday (May 10) at 6:00 p.m. (PT) at Tony Gwynn
Stadium. The Aztecs and Falcons will also meet for contests on Saturday (May 11) and Sunday (May 12) at 1:00 p.m. (PT) each day.
AZTECS ON NATIONAL TV
Saturday's contest between the Aztecs and Falcons will be televised live on the CBS Sports Network. Rich Cellini and former Major League catcher Paul LoDuca will call the action. The start time of the game has been moved up to 1:00 p.m. (PT) from its originally schedule time of 2:00 p.m. (PT).
San Diego State's all-time record against Air Force stands at 88-20 since the teams first met in 1961. The Aztecs have won the last 38 of the last 41 meeting between the teams and have dropped only six games to the Falcons during Tony Gwynn's reign as head coach. SDSU's last loss at home to Air Force came in a 7-6 defeat on March 16, 2002 and it is 26-0 against the Falcons in San Diego since that loss. The Aztecs are 46-7 vs. the Falcons in San Diego and 37-13 at Air Force's home field. The Aztecs have won all five meetings at neutral sites.
MW TOURNEY IMPLICATIONS
San Diego State currently sits in second place in the Mountain West, tied with UNLV at 13-11 in league play. New Mexico has clinched the regular-season title. In the six-team conference tournament (May 22-26 in Fresno), the top two seeds (i.e. first- and second-place finishers) earn byes in the first round. Should the Aztecs and UNLV finish with identical records, the Rebels would get the bye as they hold the tiebreaker against SDSU by virtue of winning four of the six games between the teams this season. SDSU finishes its season with this weekend's three game vs. Air Force followed by three home games vs. New Mexico (May 16-18). UNLV will end the regular season with six road contests, three at Nevada this weekend and three at Air Force next weekend.
DEFENSE AND PITCHING
The Aztecs are on course to record their best season fielding percentage in the history of the program dating back to 1936. The team's current fielding mark of .975 surpasses the school record of .974 turned in by the 2009 squad. In addition, SDSU will also likely set a team mark for errors in a season since the Aztecs began playing a minimum of 40 games in a season (1965). They have 45 miscues with the next lowest season total being 65 in 2009. The Aztecs could also finish with their lowest team earned run average in 17 seasons. Their current mark of 3.85 is the lowest since the 1996 campaign when they ended the year with a 3.31 ERA.
FRANCE COMING ON
Over the past 10 games freshman third baseman Tyler France is hitting .321. He has also drawn 11 walks over that period for an on-base percentage of .511 over the last 10 contests. He is tied for the team home run lead with three and is second with 26 RBI. France has the team's highest batting average (.352) in Mountain West play.
ROMANSKI STELLAR DEFENSIVELY
Catcher Jake Romanski has thrown out 10 of the last 15 runners trying to steal when he is behind the plate dating back to April 13. At Riverside on Tuesday (May 7) he had a pair of hits (single, double) and scored twice while also reaching base safely with two walks.
MUNO PACES OFFENSE
Despite missing 19 games due to injury, first baseman Ryan Muno leads the team in doubles with 12 and RBI with 31. His streak of reaching base (via hit, walk of HBP) reached 22 before coming to an end against San Francisco on April 29. That streak is the longest by an Aztec this season
MUÑOZ GETS ON
Outfielder Matt Muñoz is batting .368 (14-for-38) over the past 10 games with a double and seven RBI. He made his debut as the leadoff hitter in the contest at UNLV on April 21. In that game he had a pair of hits, a walk and scored a run. In his nine games in the leadoff role, Muñoz has batted .351 with a .415 on-base percentage.
