May 15, 2014
FRSSNO, Calif. - San Diego State will square off against Fresno State in the opening contest of their three-game series tonight at 6:35 p.m. at Beiden Field in Fresno. The series will wrap up the regular season for both teams as they prepare for next week's Mountain West Tournament in Las Vegas.
San Diego State comes into this evening's contest with an overall record of 35-17 and 15-12 in the Mountain West. The Aztecs can still finish anywhere from a tie for first to fifth place in the final league standings which determine the seeds for the conference tourney.
Fresno State's record stands at 26-25 and their 12-15 mark in Mountain West action means they can catch the Aztecs with a sweep of this week's series.
San Diego State will send sophomore right-hander Bubba Derby (6-3, 2.72) to the mound tonight where he will be opposed by Fresno State junior right-hander Jordan Brink (4-3, 2.49).
The Aztecs won two of three from the Bulldogs at Tony Gwynn Stadium in late March. That series included a pair of one-run wins for SDSU and a two-run win for FSU in three low-scoring affairs that saw each team score a total of seven runs during the weekend.
San Diego State and Fresno State will also play games on Friday at 6:35 p.m. and Saturday and 2:05 p.m. The Mountain West Tournament gets underway next Wednesday, May 21, at Earl E. Wilson Stadium on the campus of UNLV.
