San Diego State at Colorado State Postgame Quotes
San Diego State Postgame Quotes -- at Colorado State
Head Coach Brian Dutcher
"We went to more of a free-flowing offense and we turned it over more than I would like to but we made big plays and that is what you have to do to win on the road. You have to make big plays. Everyone knows that on the offensive end but the defensive end is equally as important and I thought our kids got stops, timely stops when we needed it. Last year at this time we were 0-3. This year we are 2-1 and heading for a home game. I am real happy with how the team played. They played for each other. They shared the ball. They played the right way and that is all you can ask as a coach. Can they play better? Yes. But as long as they play the right way, I am really pleased."
Is Jalen McDaniels getting more comfortable on the floor:
"I think you can just see that when he is on the floor. He doesn't play scared. He doesn't play nervous for a redshirt freshman. He plays with great confidence and swagger and that's what I want from him. Jalen is a wonderful freshman so is Jordan Schakel and Matt Mitchell. I have three really good freshmen that with the veterans like Trey, Malik, Jeremy, Max and all of my veteran players that provide us great chemistry together."
Jeremy Hemsley appears to be playing well:
"Jeremy has turned his game around since the USD road game. He has been immeasurably important to us. At the start, it was just at the defensive end. Now, I think everyone can see, he is making the three ball. He has made it in multiple games. As he continues to do that we have the bench we need to be successful in this conference."
Does a win like this build confidence:
"If it doesn't build confidence I am in the wrong business. Winning always builds confidence. Sometimes, the thing you need to watch as a coach is that it is not a false confidence. Sometimes you play poorly and win and you are rewarded anyway. We did not play poorly. We turned it over too much but we played hard and played well and deserved to win tonight."
How did you get so many open looks on offense:
"Spacing is everything in offense. We don't have two players next to each other. We got guys filling the corners, filling the opposite spot. When we do get penetration off a ball screen, the passers know where to look. The guys are where they are supposed to be and then they have stepped up and made timely shots when they do get that opportunity.
Freshman forward Jalen McDaniels
The significance of tonight's victory:
"It was very important for us to get a road win to show the conference we could win on the road and play with toughness on the road and I feel like we did that tonight."
To what do you attribute your big game tonight:
"I feel like my teammates were finding me and putting me in the right spots and I was just executing the plays. Shout out to (my teammates)."
What is the significance of having a senior like Trey Kell:
"He was real poised in the end. He hit a big three for us and we can count on him. You can see why we can count on him. He makes big plays."
What was the significance of Jeremy Hemseley back (he missed the last road game at Wyoming):
"It was great to have Jeremy back. He brings energy off the bench and plays great defense. He makes the shots that he takes and gets to the basket."
Junior guard Jeremy Hemsley
On his improved play of late:
"It was just trusting my coaches and trusting my teammates and most of all trusting myself. I have struggled a lot this year and I think the best thing I have done is just staying positive. At the end of the day, basketball is just a game. I have been playing this game my whole life and it was starting to stress me out in the beginning of the year. I had to remember I have been playing basketball my whole life and I can't make basketball anything more than what it is. I have been playing confident and letting the game come to me."
On the significance of his defensive play:
"It is really important. Ever since I have turned my mindset to playing as hard as I can on defense, it seems like everything has been working for me. My mindset is definitely on locking up my defender the best that I can and making each night awful for my defender. It has been working so it is a mindset I will keep moving forward."
On the significance of getting a road win:
"It feels really good and I think it gives us confidence after losing games on the road. Last year, we lost a number of road games. I think winning this game on the road is a good positive builder and it shows us that we really can do anything when we stick together and act as a family."
On the long break prior to the Gonzaga game:
"It is definitely helpful but it was rough too. During those days 12 days getting ready for the Gonzaga game, our coaches ran us so much. That definitely helped us and we were able to prepare so much better. I think the coaches have done a great job with that."
