Behind a balanced effort and in front of a sold-out crowd, San Diego State never trailed and defeated Cal State San Marcos, 81-66, Friday night in the team's lone exhibition prior to the start of the 2013-14 campaign. All eleven Aztecs who played earned their way into the scoring column, led by JJ O'Brien's 21 points and Josh Davis' 13 points and 10 rebounds.

SDSU, which started Davis, O'Brien, Winston Shepard, Skylar Spencer and Xavier Thames, jumped out to an 8-0 lead before allowing a Cougar three-pointer 3 minutes and 50 seconds into the contest. The Aztecs ultimately increased their lead to 10 after answering with seven consecutive points.

San Diego State led by as many as 10 points with just over eight minutes to play until Cal State San Marcos, a team that won 23 games a year ago, went on a 6-0 run to get within four points. Both teams traded buckets the final seven minutes and the Aztecs went into the locker room ahead, 39-33.

The Cougars opened the second half with a three-pointer to cut their deficit to three, but SDSU kept the visitors at arm's length. The Aztecs hit three straight jumpers and used a Davis tip-in to up their lead to 10 in the ensuing minutes.

CSUSM chipped away at San Diego State's lead and got to within five, but the Aztecs used one of their patented runs, this time an 8-2 spurt, to move ahead by 11. The Cougars, however, would not go away without a fight as they put together a 12-3 scoring run to cut their deficit to 58-55 with 8:26 to play. From that point on, the Aztecs never allowed Cal State San Marcos to get closer than five points the rest of the way en route to their 20th straight exhibition victory.

O'Brien led the squad in scoring, which would have eclipsed his career high of 18 points. The junior also added six rebounds and a game-high-tying four assists. Davis, a newcomer from Tulane, posted a double-double in his first action in an Aztec uniform. A season ago, Davis posted 19 double-doubles, which were the fourth-most in Division I.

Shepard added 10 points and four rebounds in a starting role and freshman Dakarai Allen had nine points off the bench in his first-ever action. Other Aztecs who played on the Viejas floor for the first time include Aqeel Quinn (5 points) and D'Erryl Williams (2 points).

Cal State San Marcos was led by Jason Johnson's game-high 27 points. De'End Parker, meanwhile, added 14 points and a game-high-tying four assists.

The Aztecs officially open the season on Friday, Nov. 8, when they play host UC Riverside at 7 p.m. PT.
