San Diego State Postgame Quotes

San Diego State head coach Steve Fisher

Opening statement:
"I told Bill Carr after the game that I thought his kids played terrific basketball in the first half - and probably played better than we did. He said that it's the best they've played all season (in the first half). I think that it was not us being bad but them being good. I thought that we had two or three, maybe four times when we were going to get steals and they got baskets. They had two or three times where the shot clock was under five seconds when they scored. So they were pretty efficient. Could we have been better? Yes. I think a lot of that was them. In the second half, we did a better job of staying in front of them; they missed some of the shots that they were making in the first half and we did what most people thought should have been done in the first half: get a spurt and kept a lead and built on it. It was nice to see so many of our guys contribute. Obviously nice to see James Johnson get his first taste of college basketball in a long, long time. And I thought our players did a nice job of saying `let's get James some touches where he has a chance to get some looks at the rim'. We feel good that we're 9-1. We are going to move forward and get ourselves ready for (the trip to) Hawaii and play good basketball there."

On Jamaal Franklin and LeBradford Franklin not suiting up:
"Jamaal has been nursing a back that may have come from a hamstring injury. His back has really been bothering him and (athletic trainer) Tom (Abdenour) came to me saying `I can't get him loosened up.' So we watched him during our shoot-around today and Tom said `I don't think he should play.' If we had played a conference game, we probably would have played him but we felt it was in our best interests that he not play. LeBradford is going to take a little time off. He's got a family situation that he's dealing with. We talked about it and L.B. was the one who said he'd like to not suit up and take a few days off. He's not going to go with us to Hawaii - that's his choosing. His is not an injury. Jamaal's is an injury that will hopefully get taken care of before it gets serious."

On playing without Jamaal Franklin's energy:
"I would hope that we would have enough with Chase and X (Xavier Thames) in particular to create energy. I really thought that they did a good job handling our pressure. We go 9-0 and I think we've got a chance to blow them out of the gate early. Then we turn it over and they score a layup out of the turnover and then score seven straight. I think that gave them the belief that they were going to play with us for a while. I want to say that that was. We have too many good players to say that not having Jamaal caused us to not be energized as good as we could have been."

San Diego State sophomore forward James Johnson

On his San Diego State debut:
"It was great to have my guys (Chase Tapley, Xavier Thames) over here. These guys gave me the ball where I needed it to make buckets. I think it was a good debut and we all showed up well tonight."

On tonight's atmosphere:
"It's definitely a big, big difference from the last venue I played at. It's great having "The Show" there and that fan support, every night, no matter how big the game is or who we're playing against. That consistency is great with our fans."

San Diego State senior guard Chase Tapley

On the difference between the first and second half:
"Really, it was just getting a lock down on the defensive end. In the first half they got a lot of wide open threes and a lot of open shots. We weren't really getting to the loose balls like we needed to. In the second half we just came out with a different type of intensity, the type of intensity that we should've had in the first half. (James Johnson) really got us going with some dunks, we had some great passes from Xavier (Thames) and we really capitalized on those buckets."

On the team's confidence heading into the Diamond Head Classic:
"We're definitely still getting better as a whole each and every day in practice. I really feel confident of how we're jelling together. From the first game until now, we've made some major improvements and that's what we have to keep on doing day by day."

San Diego State junior guard Xavier Thames

On if Jamaal Franklin's absence affected the team's energy tonight:
"It did a little bit because he wasn't in the starting line-up, but we made a few adjustments and made it happen. We played the defense like we're used to playing."

Point Loma Nazarene Postgame Quotes

Point Loma Nazarene head coach Bill Carr

Opening statement:
"I thought we controlled the tempo of the game for a long stretch. We guarded them OK. When we had an open shot, we shot it with confidence. But let me tell you something, that team over there in that other locker room is really good. You make a mistake and they're on a seven- or eight-point run."

On PLNU's shooting:
"For the most part during the year, we've been getting open shots. So I just figured it would only be a matter of time before we made them. I like my team, they're competitors. Our record doesn't show it right now, but we've been in every game and most of them we've been up in the second half or by double digits."

On how good SDSU can be:
"Well you throw Jamaal (Franklin) in there, they can be really explosive. I said it yesterday, I think this group plays really well together and they share the ball. They've got so many weapons. You can only hold down (Chase) Tapley for so long. His game is so smooth and he's an unbelievable defender. I think he might be their best defender because he's so smart."
