Jan. 23, 2014
ST. LOUIS - San Diego State senior guard Xavier Thames has been selected to the midseason Oscar Robertson Trophy Watch List, the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) announced Thursday afternoon. The Sacramento, Calif., native is one of 23 players on the list and the only representative from a Pacific Time Zone school.
The 6-3, 195-pound Thames is the first Aztec in recent memory to be eligible for an award that is to be presented to the national player of the year by its namesake at the Devon Energy College Basketball Awards on April 14 at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, Okla.
Thames, a two-time national player of the week this season, is averaging a team-high 16.9 points and 2.7 assists, to go with 2.8 rebounds and 1.8 steals. The senior has been outstanding from three-point range and the charity stripe, knocking down 45.6 percent of his attempts from behind the arc and 81.1 percent from the free-throw line.
A three-year starter, Thames is coming off a 15-point performance at San José State on Wednesday to help the seventh-ranked Aztecs to their 16th straight victory. San Diego State heads into the Saturday's game at Utah State with a 17-1 overall record and an unblemished 6-0 mark in league play. In fact, SDSU is 6-0 in conference action for the first time as a Division I program and for first time since going 7-0 vs. CCAA competition in 1966-67.
