Xavier Thames on the Naismith Trophy Midseason Top-30 List
Feb. 13, 2014
ATLANTA - San Diego State senior guard Xavier Thames is one of 30 NCAA Division I men's basketball players up for the 2013-14 Naismith Trophy presented by AT&T, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced Thursday morning.
The Sacramento, Calif., native is one of two players representing schools from the state of California and one of two from the Mountain West. Thames' midseason player-of-the-year candidacy is his second after being named to the Oscar Robertson Trophy Watch List back in January.
The two-time national player of the week leads the Aztecs in scoring (17.9), assists (2.7), steals (1.7), three-point field-goal percentage (.410), three-point field goals (43) and free-throw percentage (.833). Earlier this week, the point guard was tabbed the MW Player of the Week after averaging 20.0 points on 64.3 percent shooting, 57.1 percent from three-point distance and 90.0 percent from the charity stripe in wins at Boise State and Nevada.
Thames is the second Aztec in as many seasons and third since 2011 to appear on the Naismith Midseason Top-30 List. Kawhi Leonard landed on the list in 2011, while Jamaal Franklin appeared a season ago.
Thames and the fifth-ranked Aztecs return to action on Saturday when they play host to Air Force at Viejas Arena. Tip is set for 5:05 p.m. PT with the game airing nationally on CBS Sports Network.
