No. 15/14 #AztecMBB Falls to UNLV, 82-75
Anthony Marshall scored a season-high 20 points, and Justin Hawkins and Khem Birch scored off rebounds on consecutive possessions in the final 1:18 to help UNLV upset No. 15 San Diego State 82-75 on Wednesday night.

Following a heartbreaking midweek defeat, No. rv/22 San Diego State (18-6, 6-4 MW), winners of four of its last six MW games, makes the annual journey to Thomas & Mack Center to face UNLV (18-7; 5-5 MW) on Saturday evening. Game time is set for 6 p.m. PT and the contest will be televised by NBC Sports Network, with radio coverage on AM 600 KOGO and 101 KGB.

Having weathered the injury to junior point guard Xavier Thames (missed four MW games due to a lower back strain, but has played the last two games), SDSU is playing some of its best basketball of the season. During the recent six-game stretch (4-2), the Aztecs won three games by 21 or more points. The two losses during that stretch were a three-point loss at Air Force (11-1 at home) and a six-point loss at No. 24/24 Colorado State (27 straight home wins), in a game in which the Aztecs led with less than 90 seconds to play.

On Wednesday, the Aztecs fell to the Rams for just the second time in the last 14 meetings, with a 66-60 setback at Moby Arena. Sophomore forward JJ O'Brien gave the Aztecs a 60-58 lead with less than 90 seconds remaining, but Colorado State scored the final eight points of the game to claim the win.

Senior guard Chase Tapley led four SDSU players in double figures with 16 points. Junior All-America candidate Jamaal Franklin added 11 points and seven rebounds. Thames, meanwhile, scored 12 points, his highest scoring output in more than a month.

UNLV owns a 34-21 advantage in the series, but the Aztecs have won nine of the last 12 encounters (9-3). San Diego State has won five of the last six match-ups with UNLV in Las Vegas. In fact, the Aztecs have handed the Rebels two of their last four home losses and five of their last 18 home defeats dating back to Feb. 3, 2009.

SDSU will return to Thomas & Mack Center next month for the MW tournament, an event that SDSU has won four times, including two of the last three years. The Aztecs will look to advance to the final, which will be played one month from Saturday, for a fifth straight year.
