Xavier Thames Lands on USBWA All-District IX Team
March 11, 2014
LAS VEGAS - San Diego State senior guard Xavier Thames was voted to the United State Basketball Writers Association All-District IX team, the USBWA announced Tuesday afternoon. The Mountain West Player of the Year was one of 10 from California, Oregon, Washington, Hawaii, Arizona and Alaska to make the squad.
The Sacramento, Calif., native is the first Aztec to make the all-district team since Jamaal Franklin in 2012 and is the 11th player in school history to accomplish the feat.
The all-Mountain West first-team selection led SDSU in scoring (16.9), assists (3.0), steals (1.8), three-point shooting (.386) and free-throw shooting (.829) for an Aztec team that won the MW regular-season title outright. Thames has helped San Diego State to a 27-3 record, its second-highest win total in school history, and a No. t-8/7 national ranking heading into this week's MW Championship.
SDSU returns to action on Thursday when it faces either eighth-seeded Utah State or ninth-seeded Colorado State in the quarterfinals of the league tourney. Tip time is set for noon PT on CBS Sports Network.
