#AztecMBB Honored at San Diego City Council Meeting
April 15, 2014
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's basketball program was honored today by the San Diego City Council. Mayor and SDSU graduate Kevin Faulconer proclaimed April 15, 2014, as SDSU Men's Basketball Day in the city of San Diego.
The Aztec coaching staff, along with student-athletes Josh Davis and Skylar Spencer, was introduced to Faulconer and his staff inside his chambers prior to attending the city council meeting. Before discussing official city business, San Diego State was introduced with head coach Steve Fisher and Spencer making few comments. Shortly thereafter the proclamation was made by Faulconer and councilmember Marti Emerald that today is SDSU Men's Basketball Day in America's Finest City.
San Diego State finished the season ranked in the AP poll for the final 16 weeks of the season, and was in the last 17 USA Today Coaches Poll rankings. The Aztecs rose as high as No. 5 in both polls, a spot they held for three-consecutive weeks. SDSU also never dropped out of the top 15 once the calendar rolled over to 2014.
The Aztecs matched their best-ever finish in the NCAA tournament despite being picked to finish fourth in the MW preseason poll, and not receiving a single vote in either major preseason top-25 rankings. En route to its league-leading eighth conference championship, SDSU tied the school record with 20-straight victories before winning the second-most games in program history.
In 2014-15, San Diego State is expected to return three starters and add a top-15 recruiting class, with a high-major transfer eligible at the start of the season. In all, the Aztecs are poised to welcome back three of its top-four scorers.
