M. Hoops Draws Road Game at Illinois State in MW-MVC Challenge
May 3, 2018
SAN DIEGO - San Diego State will hit the road this season for the Mountain West-Missouri Valley Challenge to face Illinois State on Saturday, Dec. 1. This will mark the second time in four years the schools have met in the Challenge. Game time and television details will be released at a later date.
The Aztecs and Redbirds previously met in the 2015-16 season opener at Viejas Arena with the Scarlet and Black earning a 71-60 victory. SDSU shot 47.9 percent from the floor, while limiting the visitors to just 30.8-percent shooting, and received a game-high 20 points to go with six rebounds and five assists from Jeremy Hemsley, who is entering his senior campaign.
The MW-MVC Challenge started in 2009-10 and ended in 2012-13, before it was renewed in time for the 2015-16 season. San Diego State is 5-2 all-time in Challenge games and 2-1 in road games, beating Drake in the inaugural year and Missouri State in 2012-13, before falling at Loyola Chicago in 2016-17.
In 2017, for the second consecutive season, the Mountain West and Missouri Valley split the 10-game series, 5-5. The MW has an all-time series edge of 3-1-3 in seven previous Challenge seasons, including an overall advantage of 38-27 in games played in association with the series.
Illinois State finished the 2017-18 campaign with an 18-15 overall record and a 10-8 mark in the Missouri Valley, which was good for a third-place tie with Drake. The Redbirds, who defeated South Carolina, Tulsa and Ole Miss during the non-conference portion of their schedule, advanced to the conference tournament title game, falling to Loyola Chicago. ISU is slated to return in 2018-19 its top six scorers from a year ago, including a trio that averaged more than 15 points per game.
This past season, the Aztecs made their seventh NCAA tournament appearance in the last nine years and earned their 12th postseason berth in the last 13 seasons. SDSU finished the 2017-18 campaign with a 22-11 record and won the Mountain West tournament crown, its conference-leading 11th league championship.
SDSU won nine of its final 10 games of the campaign and is expected to return starters Jalen McDaniels, Matt Mitchell and Devin Watson as well as significant contributors Jeremy Hemsley, Jordan Schakel and Nolan Narain for the 2018-19 campaign.
