The San Diego State men's basketball team released its 2012-13 non-conference schedule today. The reigning back-to-back Mountain West regular-season champions will play 14 games before the start of league action.

The Aztecs will start with a pair of exhibition games vs. Cal State San Marcos on Nov. 1 and vs. UC San Diego on Nov. 5, before opening the campaign on Nov. 9 vs. Syracuse in the inaugural Battle on the Midway, which will take place on the USS Midway Museum flight deck (Fox Sports, 4 p.m. PT). Last season, the Orange advanced to the Elite Eight and this year's match-up between two 2012 NCAA Tournament participants has been tabbed as the 10th- and 11th-best non-conference game of the season by Jeff Goodman ( and Andy Glockner (, respectively.

San Diego State is set to make its Viejas Arena debut on Nov. 11 when San Diego Christian pays a visit for a third consecutive year. Then it is off to Springfield, Mo., for the annual Mountain West-Missouri Valley Challenge. The Aztecs will face Missouri State at 1 p.m. CT on Nov. 17, a team it defeated in the first round of the 2007 NIT. SDSU is 2-1 in the history of the MW-MVC Challenge.

The Scarlet and Black return to Montezuma Mesa on Nov. 21 for a mid-week game vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff before making the short ride north on Interstate 5 to face USC on Nov. 25. The SDSU-USC clash ranks as the 44th-best non-league game in the game by Goodman and is a rematch of last year's thriller in which the Aztecs won, 56-54, at Viejas Arena.

San Diego State's Pac-12 trip continues the next weekend when it travels to Honda Center and Anaheim, Calif., to go head-to-head with UCLA. The John R. Wooden Classic game will mark the Aztecs' third appearance in the event and first since 2008. The ninth-best non-conference game nationally, according to Goodman and Glockner, is set for a 7 p.m. PT start and will be televised by ESPNU.

After a first month of the season in which the Aztecs are at home sporadically, San Diego State returns to campus for a season-long four-game homestand. SDSU welcomes Texas Southern on Dec. 3 and will be followed by 2012 Tournament participant UC Santa Barbara on Dec. 6. The Aztecs will enter the game with UCSB having won seven straight vs. the Gauchos, including last year's overtime win at The Thunderdome.

The City Showdown with USD is scheduled for Dec. 15 and San Diego State will look to defeat the Toreros for the seventh time overall and for the sixth consecutive time inside Viejas Arena. The homestand concludes on Dec. 18, when Point Loma Nazarene heads east on Interstate 8.

SDSU will spend the Christmas holiday in Honolulu, Hawaii, to compete in the Diamond Head Classic. The Aztecs will meet 2012 CBI participant San Francisco on Dec. 22 (ESPNU), and then face either Ole Miss (2012 NIT participant) or Indiana State (2012 CIT participant) on Dec. 23 on ESPNU. Christmas Eve is an off day for everyone involved before hitting the hardwood on Christmas Day. San Diego State's Dec. 25 opponent will be Arizona (2012 NIT participant), East Tennessee State, Hawai'i or 2012 NIT participant Miami (Fla.). Game times and television arrangements for Dec. 25 are to be determined.

The Aztecs will put the finishing touches on their non-conference schedule on Jan. 2, when they play host to CSU Bakersfield, which earned a berth in the 2012 Tournament.

The 2012-13 San Diego State home schedule is sold out. Although there are no season tickets available, there is a chance a limited amount of individual tickets will be made available at later date for those games taking place during winter break.

The Aztecs, who finished the 2011-12 campaign with a 26-8 record, are coming off their fourth straight season with at least 25 victories and their third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. In each of the last seven years, the back-to-back Mountain West regular-season co-champions have won 20 or more games and have advanced to the postseason.

In 2012-13, San Diego State is slated to return four of its five starters and its top four scorers from last season. The Aztecs are also slated to welcome three Division I transfers and a heralded recruiting class that was ranked No. 24 nationally by
