San Diego State junior Jamaal Franklin has been named a preseason third-team All-American by Sporting News and is the only representative from a Mountain West institution. A year ago, Franklin was tabbed an Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American.

A native of Hawthorne, Calif., the 2012 Mountain West Conference Player of the Year enjoyed his best season on Montezuma Mesa in 2011-12. Franklin averaged 17.4 points, 7.9 rebounds and 1.5 assists for an Aztec squad that won MW regular-season title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third straight year.

This season, Franklin, who was also named a preseason third-team All-American by Athlon Sports, returns for his junior campaign as SDSU's leader in scoring, rebounding, free throws made, 20-point games, 30-point efforts, 10-rebound performances and double-doubles. He also returns as the team's second-leading returner in three-point field goals and steals. On a conference level, Franklin is the top returner in scoring and is the league's third-leading returner in rebounds.

The Aztecs, who finished the 2011-12 campaign with a 26-8 record, are coming off their fourth straight season with at least 25 victories and their third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. In each of the last seven years, SDSU has won 20 or more games and advanced to the postseason.

In 2012-13, San Diego State is slated to return four of its five starters and its top four scorers from last season. The Aztecs are also slated to welcome three Division I transfers and a heralded recruiting class.
