Oct. 31, 2016

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State, preseason Mountain West favorites, will play its first exhibition game on Thursday when UC San Diego visits Steve Fisher Court at Viejas Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. PT. A very limited amount of tickets are still available at GoAztecs.com.

The Aztecs are receiving votes in both major top-25 polls as they enter the new season. SDSU is the fifth team out of the Associated Press Top 25 poll after earning 48 points (No. 30). In the USA Today Coaches Poll, meanwhile, SDSU is ranked 35th with 17 points.

The national poll results come weeks after San Diego State was picked as the heavy favorite to win the Mountain West for a fourth consecutive year. The back-to-back-to-back regular-season champions received 23 of a possible 27 first-place votes and 293 points, ahead of second-place Nevada, which earned 253 points.

In addition to the MW preseason poll being revealed at Mountain West Media Day in Las Vegas, Nevada, the league also announced its preseason individual honors. Junior guard Trey Kell was voted to the all-conference team, while Jalen McDaniels and Montaque Gill-Caesar were named the conference’s preseason co-freshman and newcomer of the year, respectively.

Kell headlines a trio of returning starters that includes sophomores Jeremy Hemsley and Zylan Cheatham. Joining them are three other Aztecs who have started a significant amount of time in seniors Dakarai Allen and Matt Shrigley, and junior Malik Pope.

The Tritons, meanwhile, are coming off a 2015-16 season that saw them go 24-8 overall and 15-5 in the CCAA. UCSD advanced to the conference tournament final, but fell to Humboldt State, and ultimately earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II tournament where it made a West Regional championship game appearance.

San Diego State, which went 28-10 and advanced to its 11th straight postseason tournament last year, will close out its exhibition schedule on Nov. 7, when it welcomes Cal State San Marcos to Viejas Arena. A limited amount of tickets for the 7 p.m. PT contest are also available at GoAztecs.com.
