Aztecs Can't Duplicate Road Success In Syracuse
San Diego State battled Syracuse to a five-point halftime deficit before over 27,000 fans Monday, but the Aztecs fell short of a second straight NIT road victory. SDSU lost 80-64. Sixth-seeded San Diego State (22-11) was one of three teams to pull a first-round upset on the road, beating third-seeded Missouri State 74-70.

The season-opening contest is being broadcast by FOX Sports San Diego and distributed nationally across additional FOX Sports platforms. Dick Enberg has the call along with former NBA player Steve Kerr. Erin Andrews will join the duo reporting from the sidelines. Long-time Aztec play-by-play man Ted Leitner will describe the action on radio on KOGO 95.7 FM and AM 600.

The preseason Mountain West favorites begin their 92nd season of basketball ranked in both preseason polls for the first time in school history. SDSU entered the 2010-11 campaign ranked 25th in the preseason Associated Press Top 25, but were the first team out in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll. That year, the Aztecs went on to share the MW regular-season title, win the conference tournament, advance to the Sweet 16 and finish with a 34-3 record.

SDSU opens 2012-13 with much hype and anticipation as it returns four starters off last year's squad that shared the league regular-season crown, earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and posted a 26-8 record. Among the four starters are 2012 All-American and preseason MW Player of the Year Jamaal Franklin (Jr., G), preseason all-conference selection Chase Tapley (Sr., G) and 2012 all-Mountain West honoree Xavier Thames (Jr. G).

Joining the four returning starters and seven letterwinners are three Division I transfers and a recruiting class that was rated 24th by Transfers Dwayne Polee II (So., F), the preseason Mountain West Co-Newcomer of the Year, and JJ O'Brien (So., F) are eligible immediately, while James Johnson (So., F) will be available mid-year. Freshmen Winston Shepard (F), the highest-rated recruit to ever sign at San Diego State (21st on Rivals150), Skylar Spencer (F) and Matt Shrigley (F) join the aforementioned trio and are expected to contribute this season.
