#AztecMBB Enters AP Top-25 Poll at No. 24
Dec. 2, 2013
SAN DIEGO - After claiming the DIRECTV Wooden Legacy championship over the Thanksgiving weekend, San Diego State made its 2013-14 debut in the Associated Press Top-25 poll, coming in at No. 24. SDSU, which won three games in four days to improve to 5-1, earned 150 points and is the only Mountain West school in this week's poll.
The Aztecs opened the tournament with a dominating 72-52 victory over College of Charleston before defeating No. 20/18 Creighton, 86-80, in the semifinals. Then on Championship Sunday at Honda Center, San Diego State downed No. 25/rv Marquette, 67-59.
The back-to-back victories over AP Top-25 teams in consecutive games marked the first time the Aztecs have accomplished the feat in school history. In the process, SDSU joined Villanova as the only programs to beat two AP-ranked teams this year and the only schools to do it in back-to-back fashion.
While sitting at No. 24, the appearance marks the fourth straight season in which the Aztecs have found themselves among the AP Top 25. This is also the first time SDSU has been ranked in the AP poll since Jan. 28, 2013.
The Aztecs, who are receiving votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll (28th overall), return to action on Thursday, Dec. 5, when they travel across town to face USD. Game time for the City Championship is set for 8 p.m. PT on FOX Sports San Diego.
SDSU will return home on Sunday, Dec. 8, when it plays host to Washington at noon PT. The game vs. the Huskies will be the final home game before San Diego State's mini-plan kicks in. The five-game mini-plan features home games vs. Southern Utah (Dec. 18), McNeese State (Dec. 21), St. Katherine College (Dec. 27), Boise State (Jan. 8) and Fresno State (Jan. 15) and costs only $75.
