Dec. 16, 2013
SAN DIEGO -
No. 24/23 San Diego State returns to action for the first time in 10 days and with finals in the rearview mirror on Wednesday night when Southern Utah pays the Aztecs a visit. The game is set for 7 p.m. PT, will air live on television on 4SD and will be streamed via the Mountain West Network. Ted Leitner will have the radio call on The Mighty 1090 and 105.7 The Walrus.
After playing five games in 11 days and going 5-0 in the process, SDSU took time off to focus on final exams. Despite not playing since beating Washington, 70-63, back on Sunday, Dec. 8, the Aztecs moved up in both of the major college basketball top-25 rankings. On Monday, San Diego State climbed one spot in the Associated Press Top-25 Poll to No. 24 and did the same in the USA Today Coaches Poll, rising from No. 24 to No. 23.
In the game vs. the Huskies, SDSU rallied from 10 down in the first half and nine at halftime to improve to 12-2 in its last 14 vs. current members of the Pac-12 Conference. Senior guard Xavier Thames led the way with game-high totals of 19 points and six assists, with 14 of his 19 and all six of his helpers coming in the second half. Sophomore forward Winston Shepard, meanwhile, had 17 points and a career-high three steals and senior forward Josh Davis chipped in with a team-best 10 rebounds and a career-high three thefts. As a team, San Diego State rebounded from a 27.6-percent shooting performance in the first half by making 15 of its 25 field-goal attempts (.600) in the final 20 minutes en route to the seven-point victory.
The Thunderbirds head for Montezuma Mesa after dropping a 73-51 home decision to UNLV on Saturday. Southern Utah and San Diego State have played one common opponent thus far -- UC Riverside -- with SUU falling at home to the Highlanders, 74-59, on Nov. 23. The Aztecs opened the campaign with UCR and won, 77-41.
SDSU, which has won six straight, will continue its season-long four-game homestand on Saturday night when McNeese State travels to America's Finest City. The Cowboys will be playing game No. 8 of a nine-game road trip vs. the Aztecs and they visit Louisiana Tech on Tuesday, Dec. 17, before heading to California. The pre-Christmas date will also air on 4SD, the Mountain West Network, The Mighty 1090 and 105.7 The Walrus.
