- In his six years at Ball State, Cardinal defensive players combined to be named first-team all-conference four times and second-team all-league on six occasions. In 2008, free safety Sean Baker was named the MAC Freshman of the Year.

- Before moving to Muncie, Smith was an assistant coach at Indiana State for 15 years, including the last two as defensive coordinator of the Sycamores, where he helped tutor six All-Americans including NFL Draft pick Dan Brandenburg.
