Graduate Assistant - Defense

At San Diego State:

  • Zach Shapiro is in his second season as a graduate assistant coach at San Diego State. His focus will be on the defensive side of the ball.

Playing Experience:

  • Played defensive line for San Diego State and ended his career in 2009.Once his football eligibility had expired, he played on the SDSU rugby club team.
  • Played in all 12 games for the Aztecs during his senior season, recording 18 tackles (eight solos), three tackles for loss and a quarterback sack.
  • Saw action in seven games for the Aztecs during the 2008 campaign.
  • Originally a walk-on at San Diego State, he earned a scholarship his senior season.
  • Played football at Clairemont High School, where he was a first-team all-league selection on both offense and defense.
  • Played defensive line and fullback.
  • Team won the Baseline League title three consecutive years.
  • Served as team captain, notching 96 tackles, 10 sacks and five forced fumbles in 2004.
  • Squad's player of the game with 12 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble against Damien High School.

Coaching Experience:

  • Served as an linebackers coach and special teams coordinator at Hoover High from 2012-14.
  • The team claimed the league title in 2014 and advanced to the CIF championship game for the first time in school history.
  • He also coached the rugby team and served as the track and field strength and conditioning coach while at Hoover.


  • Shapiro graduated from San Diego State in 2010 with a degree in social science and an emphasis in anthropology.
  • He is currently enrolled in homeland security graduate program.
