Jan. 8, 2018
ATLANTA - San Diego State’s Tariq Thompson (San Diego/St. Augustine HS) has been named to the 17th annual Football Writers Association of America Freshman All-America team, the FWAA announced on Monday. It is the second freshmen All-America honor for Thompson, who last month was named to the USA Today Freshman All-America team along with fellow Aztec Tyler Roemer (Fernley, Nev.).
Thompson, a Warrior (safety) in Rocky Long’s 3-3-5 defense, started all 13 games this year for SDSU, registering 63 tackles (46 solo), five interceptions for 83 yards and a touchdown, four pass breakups, three tackles for loss, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and three quarterback hurries. Thompson tied for the Mountain West lead and tied for 15th nationally in interceptions per game (0.38), and is the only freshman in the country this year with multiple interceptions in multiple games.
The Aztecs (10-3) are coming off their third consecutive season with at least 10 victories, the longest streak in program history. SDSU will return seven starters on offense and seven on defense, along with its kicker and punter. San Diego State kicks off its 2018 campaign Sept. 1 at Stanford.
