Red Edges Black, 30-24, in Football Spring Game
March 26, 2014
SAN DIEGO -
Larry Clark caught a 9-yard touchdown pass from Nick Bawden in the second overtime to lead the Red team to a 30-24 victory over the Black squad Wednesday night at the annual San Diego State football Red & Black Spring Game.
The spirited scrimmage featured four ties and four lead changes, and came on the heels of the 2013 season where the Aztecs tied an FBS record by playing in four overtime games. SDSU won three of those en route to an 8-5 finish and 49-24 win over Buffalo in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.
The Black squad took the lead on the very first play of the first overtime as Marcus Stamps ran it in from 25 yards out. After failing on a 2-point conversion pass, the Red squad answered on a 5-play, 25-yard drive. Bawden, who was playing on both the Red and Black team, connected with Kene Anigbogu on a 15-yard pass. The Red team failed on a 2-point try, however, which forced another extra overtime.
Starting with the ball first in the second extra session, Clark outjumped an opponent from the Black team and caught Bawden's pass in the corner of the right end zone for the eventual game-winning score, despite the defense being flagged for a pass interference call.
The Black squad seemed poised to force another overtime when Chase Favreau found David Wells in the open field. Malik Smith, however, knocked the ball out of Wells' hands on a diving tackle and Stan Sedberry fell on the ball, sealing the win for the Red team.
Stamps gave the Black team the early lead in the first quarter when his 7-yard run completed a 9-play, 60-yard drive.
Chase Price tied it up for the Red squad later in the first quarter with a 17-yard TD run. The drive went for 71 yards on six plays.
After neither team scored in the second quarter, Damontae Kazee forced a fumble, scooped up the loose ball and ran it back 32 yards to but the Black team up, 12-6.
The Red team tied it up at 12-12 on a 6-play, 71-yard drive, culminating with a 1-yard touchdown run by Price on 3rd and goal. The big play in the drive came on a 41-yard completion from Brad Odeman to Darryl Richardson that got the Red squad all the way down to the 1-yard line.
Brandon Porter then gave the Red squad an 18-12 advantage when he returned an interception 38 yards for a score.
Bawden then found Mills with the 9-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter to force overtime, setting up the dramatic finish.
Price rushed for 106 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries, while Stamps had 73 yards and two scores on nine carries. Dwayne Garrett added 46 yards on 13 rushing attempts.
Bawden passed for a game-high 122 yards and three touchdowns, completing 12 of 30 passes with two interceptions. Odeman was 6-for-15 for 115 yards and an interception, while Favreau was 7 of 12 for 54 yards.
Mills led the wide receivers with five catches for 34 yards and a touchdown. Jemond Hazely (51 yards) and Clark (30 yards) each had three receptions, while Stamps (21 yards), Ezell Ruffin (19 yards) and Dakota Gordon (12 yards) all had two grabs.
The Aztecs kick off their 2014 season against Northern Arizona at home on Aug. 30.
