San Diego Chargers Draft Vincent Brown
April 29, 2011
SAN DIEGO - San Diego State wide receiver Vincent Brown was selected in the third round of the National Football League Draft on Friday afternoon by the San Diego Chargers. Brown, who was a first-team all-Mountain West Conference performer, led the league in receptions and receiving yards this past season and was sixth nationally in receiving yards per game (104.00).
Brown was selected with the 82nd overall pick, marking the earliest an Aztec player has been selected in the draft since 2005 when Matt McCoy (63rd overall selection) and Kirk Morrison (78th overall selection) were part of a draft that included three San Diego State players overall. Brown becomes the fourth Aztec wide receiver drafted since 2003, following J.R. Tolver (2003), Brett Swain (2008) and Chaz Schilens (2008).
A native of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Brown becomes the 14th Aztec player drafted by the Chargers and the first since quarterback Jesse Freitas was picked by the Bolts in the sixth round of the 1974 draft. Although San Diego went 36 years between Aztec draft picks, the Chargers currently have two former San Diego State players on the roster - Antwan Applewhite and Brandyn Dombroski.
Brown enjoyed a stellar senior season with the Aztecs. This past season, he caught 69 passes for 1,352 yards and 10 touchdowns, leading San Diego State to a 9-4 record and the school's first victory in a bowl game since 1969. His 1,352 receiving yards his senior season were the fourth most in school history and he produced six 100-yard receiving efforts during the 2010 campaign.
In four seasons at San Diego State, Brown caught 209 passes for 3,110 yards and 23 touchdowns. He departs the school with a record-tying 13 100-yard receiving games and is third in receiving yards, third in receptions and fifth in receiving touchdowns. Brown was on the Biletnikoff Award Watch List each of his final two seasons on The Mesa.
In his final collegiate game at Qualcomm Stadium, Brown posted a Poinsettia Bowl record-breaking performance, with 165 yards receiving on eight catches.
