Demetrius Sumler Named SDSU Football Assistant Coach
May 3, 2018
Sumler has spent the last two seasons working with the SDSU special teams as a graduate assistant coach. Sumler assisted with three-time MW Special Teams Player-of-the-Year Rashaad Penny and 2016 MW first-team kicker John Baron II, who enters 2018 as the NCAA FBS active leader in field goal percentage (.868).
Prior to joining the San Diego State coaching staff, Sumler led Central Washington to a 2012 GNAC title en route to earning first-team all-league honors at running back. Sumler also spent three seasons at Colorado from 2007-09, rushing for 714 yards and nine touchdowns in 36 games, while adding 45 catches for 333 yards. Sumler prepped at San Diego’s Cathedral Catholic High School, where he finished his career as the San Diego area’s all-time leading rusher with 5,696 yards and a combined 67 touchdowns.
Long’s coaching staff is now complete. In January, Zach Arnett (defensive coordinator), Doug Deakin (special teams coordinator/tight ends) and Kevin McGarry (assistant coach/defense) were each promoted, while Richard Sanchez (safeties) also joined the staff. Last month, both Ron Caragher (on-campus recruiting coordinator/offensive quality control) and Jerome Haywood (assistant on-campus recruiting coordinator/defensive quality control) were added to the staff.
The Aztecs finished 2017 with a 10-3 record, their school-record third consecutive season with at least 10 victories. SDSU is one of just seven schools in the nation to win at least 10 games in three consecutive seasons (also Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Wisconsin). San Diego State is scheduled to return seven starters on offense and seven on defense, along with its kicker and punter.
The Aztecs kick off their 2018 campaign at Stanford on Friday, Aug. 31.
San Diego State is accepting new account deposits on 2018 season tickets through the Aztec Ticket Office, while current season-ticket holders can also renew their tickets for the 2018 campaign. Fans can purchase tickets through GoAztecs.com, over the phone by calling (619) 283-7378, or by visiting SDCCU Stadium's Window E between 9 a.m. PT and 5 p.m. PT.
