Football’s Ron Smith Receives Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award
May 8, 2018
SAN DIEGO - San Diego State football cornerback Ron Smith recently received the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award, which is presented to student-athletes of color who exhibit academic excellence and community activism.
To be eligible for this honor, candidates must compete in an intercollegiate sport, maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, and be active on their campuses or in their communities.
Smith started all 13 games last year at cornerback for the Aztecs, recording 62 tackles (46 solo), a team-high 16 pass breakups, two tackles for loss, two interceptions and a forced fumble. Smith ranked 13th nationally in passes defended (INT + PBU) per game (1.38) and second in the Mountain West.
The publication Diverse: Issues In Higher Education sponsors the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Awards to honor undergraduate students who have excelled in the classroom as well as on the athletic field. Inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe, Jr.'s commitment to education as well as his love for the game of tennis, U.S. colleges and universities are invited to participate in this annual awards program by nominating their outstanding sports scholars. In addition to their athletic ability and academic performance, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars demonstrate a commitment to community service and student leadership.
Smith helped the Aztecs finish with a 10-3 record in 2017, their school-record third consecutive season with at least 10 victories. SDSU is one of just seven schools in the nation to win at least 10 games in three consecutive seasons (also Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Wisconsin). San Diego State is scheduled to return seven starters on offense and seven on defense, along with its kicker and punter.
San Diego State is accepting new account deposits on 2018 season tickets through the Aztec Ticket Office, while current season-ticket holders can also renew their tickets for the 2018 campaign. Fans can purchase tickets through GoAztecs.com, over the phone by calling (619) 283-7378, or by visiting Qualcomm Stadium's Window E between 9 a.m. PT and 5 p.m. PT.
