Nat Berhe Named to Jim Thorpe Award Watch List
July 12, 2013
OKLAHOMA CITY - San Diego State senior safety Nat Berhe (Colton, Calif.) is one of 48 players named to the 2013 Preseason Watch List for the Jim Thorpe Award, given to the best defensive back in college football. Berhe is the second player in school history to be a candidate for the award, joining Leon McFadden last season.
It is the fourth preseason honor this summer for Berhe, who was also named first-team all-Mountain West by Phil Steele and Athlon Sports, in addition to being named to the Lott IMPACT Trophy Watch List.
Last season Berhe led SDSU with 94 tackles, which ranked 10th in the MW and was the highest total for an Aztec since head coach Rocky Long took over the defense in 2009. He also added five pass breakups, two interceptions and a fumble recovery, while earning MW Defensive Player-of-the-Week honors on Sept. 10.
Berhe was one of only four players to start all 13 games for SDSU last season, leading the Aztec defense to a No. 1 conference ranking in rushing defense, and a No. 3 ranking in both total defense and scoring defense. He has 200 total tackles in his three-year career, and has made 27 consecutive starts.
The Jim Thorpe Award is one of the most coveted awards in college football, and is named after history's greatest all-around athlete, Jim Thorpe. Not only was Thorpe a legend on the football field, but also played professional baseball and won Olympic gold medals in the decathlon and pentathlon.
The Thorpe Award Watch List is chosen by a screening committee who compile a list of 30-50 players. The list is not final, and players who have outstanding seasons are added as the season progresses. The Thorpe Award winner is selected from three finalists and will be announced at The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, Dec. 12 on ESPN.
