About 2,500 Attend Don Coryell Memorial at Viejas Arena
July 13, 2010
About 2,500 people attended the public memorial service Monday afternoon at Viejas Arena to celebrate the life of coaching legend Don Coryell.
After a tribute by Coryell's family, San Diego County Supervisor Ron Roberts presented them with a certificate proclaiming July 12, 2010, as Don Coryell Memorial Day.
Eulogies were then given by NFL Hall of Famers Joe Gibbs, John Madden and Dan Fouts, as well as former Aztecs Jim Hanifan and Fred Dryer. All of them spoke of Coryell's intensity and commitment to the game of football, but also of his love for friends and family.
Others in attendance included SDSU President Stephen Weber, Aztec Athletic Director Jim Sterk, the Mayor of San Diego Jerry Sanders, actor and SDSU alum Carl Weathers, NFL Hall of Famer Kellen Winslow and the entire current Aztec football team, who occupied the last two rows of seating on the floor. The welcome and closing message were delivered by former Charger defensive back Miles McPherson, now the pastor of The Rock Church.
Friends and fans of coach Don Coryell are encouraged to post comments and memories at don-coryell.forevermissed.com.
In lieu of flowers, the Coryell family asks for contributions to: The Don Coryell Scholarship Fund, in care of The Campanile Foundation, 5500 Campanile Drive, San Diego, CA 92182-4313.
