SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State football team announced Tuesday that it will play Northern Illinois in a two-game home-and-home series starting in 2016.

The Aztecs will travel to Huskie Stadium in DeKalb, Ill., on Sept. 17, 2016, before NIU makes the return trip to Qualcomm Stadium the following year on Sept. 30, 2017.

SDSU has defeated the Huskies in all four meetings between the two schools, but hasn't faced NIU since the 1971 campaign when it claimed a 30-10 victory at home. The Aztecs are 10-0-1 all-time against current members of the Mid-American Conference, including a 49-24 triumph over Buffalo in the 2013 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

The Aztecs return 12 starters and 35 letterwinners from a squad the posted an 8-5 overall record and a 6-2 conference mark in 2013, culminating in their fourth straight postseason appearance. With its aforementioned victory over Buffalo last year, SDSU became one of only 29 teams in the nation, and one of just five non-BCS schools, to compete in a bowl game in four consecutive seasons.

The Huskies, meanwhile, have participated in a bowl game in each of the last six years, including a 21-14 loss to Mountain West member Utah State in the 2013 Poinsettia Bowl. In 2012, NIU earned an at-large BCS bid, falling to Florida State in the Discover Orange Bowl following its second straight MAC championship.
