CHULA VISTA, Calif. - The San Diego State men's golf team fired a 6-under 570 on Monday during the first two rounds of the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic at the par-72, 7,033-yard San Diego Country Club. After 36 holes, the Aztecs sit atop the 13-team leaderboard, with Xander Schauffele leading the field individually. Schauffele shot a season-low 67 in the first round. At one point, the junior had three straight birdies and finished the round by posting birdies on four of the last five holes. In the second round, Schauffele birdied three holes, but bogeyed the ninth and 18th holes to finish at 1-under. For the day, Schauffele turned in a 6-under 138 to enjoy a two-stroke lead over USC's Rico Hoey. Joining Schauffele in the top 10 is Nahum Mendoza III and Ricky DeSantis. Mendoza III shot a 1-over 73 over the course of the first 18 holes, but rebounded nicely in the second round with a 3-under 69 to finish with a 2-under 142, which is good for a fifth-place tie. Bogeys doomed Mendoza in the first round as his bogey-to-birdie ratio was 6-to-5, but was much better later, posting six birdies to just three bogeys over the second 18. For DeSantis, he will enter Tuesday's final round in a seventh-place tie at 1-under 143. The freshman nearly had a bogey-free first round, carding three birdies and one bogey to finish at 2-under. The second round, however, was not as kind as he registered a 1-over 73. Rounding out SDSU's fivesome is Austin Kaiser in a 21st-place tie (+3, 147) and Riccardo Michelini, who is in a tie for 25th place (+4, 148). The highlight for Kaiser was his eagle on the par-5 14th in a first round that saw him shoot 1-over. The aforementioned group of five has the Aztecs in first place by two strokes over USC (-4, 572). They are the only two schools in the field that are under par for the tournament. San Diego State also has a group of five competing as individuals. Gunn Yang is even (t-11th) for the tournament after shooting a 4-under 70 before finishing with a 4-over 74. Yang's first round featured seven birdies. Brian Song is two strokes behind Yang at plus-2 (t-19th) and is followed by Michael Koeneke (t-25th, +4, 148), James Holley (t-41st, +7, 151) and Ben Rogers (t-53rd, +10, 154). The final round of the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic will be contested on Tuesday, with the Aztecs teeing off with USC and Wake Forest on hole No. 1 starting at 9:30 a.m. PT.
