No. 20 Men's Golf Ties for Fourth at Aggie Invitational
April 19, 2009
BRYAN, Texas - The 20th-ranked San Diego State men's golf team endured wind, rain and tornadoes in Bryan, Texas, and at The Aggie Invitational on Sunday. The tournament was shortened to 36 holes after heavy thunderstorms forced the opening round to be cancelled. The course played much more difficult than in Saturday's first round, when lift and replace rules were in effect and 39 players shot par or better. Only seven players shot par or better on Sunday and the average score was more than five strokes higher. Despite the conditions, the Aztecs shot a 4-under 356 and tied for fourth place in a field where nine of the 12 teams are ranked among the nation's top 45.
San Diego State's Matt Hoffenberg finished tied for fourth place at 2-under par overall for the best Aztec finish. Hoffenberg finished one shot behind No. 66 Matt Garza of Wichita State, who finished third overall.
SDSU had three other golfers finish in the top 60 overall, beginning with 90th- ranked Johan Carlsson who finished tied for 18th place after shooting 3-over par. Classmates J.J. Spaun finishd 5-over par to finish tied for 26th, Ryan Citarella tied for 36th after finishing 7-over par, and Bryan Martin tied for 58th place after finishing 11-over par.
The Aztecs will next travel to Tuscon, Ariz. to compete in the Mountain West Conference Championships beginning on April 30.
