SANTEE, Calif. - San Diego State's James Holley (Chatsworth, Calif.) claimed medalist honors as an individual competitor on Tuesday at the WIU Carlton Oaks Invitational, hosted by Western Illinois University. The Aztec junior recorded a collective 4-over par 220, including 10 birdies, to win by one stroke over DePaul's Moritz Ackerhans (+5) on the 7,117-yard, par-72 Carlton Oaks Country Club layout.

Despite carding a 76 during the second round on Monday, Holley assumed a one-shot lead over Ackerhans and made it stand up, matching his Blue Demon adversary with a tournament-low 71 over the final 18 holes for his first collegiate victory.

SDSU had three additional individuals compete at the two-day 54-hole event, which featured teams from Bradley, CSU Bakersfield, IPFW, Nebraska-Omaha, Oakland, St. Bonaventure as well as the aforementioned DePaul and Western Illinois squads. Aztec sophomore Michael Koeneke (San Diego, Calif.) took third in the field of 51 players with a three-round total of 9-over 225, while redshirt freshmen Ben Rogers (Rosebud, Australia) and Brian Song (Beverly Hills, Calif.) both landed in a tie for fourth with a combined 13-over 229.

San Diego State, which is ranked 51st in the latest Golfstat ratings, opens its 2014 spring slate next week at The Prestige at PGA West, Feb. 17-19, in La Quinta, Calif.
