No. 22 Ranked Aztecs to Take Part of Annual ASU Thunderbird Invitational
April 7, 2006
SAN DIEGO - This weekend the Aztecs will travel to Tempe, Ariz. to participate in the annual ASU Thunderbird Invitational on April 8-9 on the par 72, 7,037 yard Karsten Golf Course. If SDSU wins this tournament, it will be the first time since the 2001-02 season that they have won three consecutive tournaments.
After recently winning at the 2006 Callaway Invitational and the Oregon Duck Invitational, the Aztecs enter their second Pac-10 hosted tournament with an air of confidence surrounding them. Although the team may be confident in their back-to-back victories, they have to be aware that at this tournament, there is a tough competitive field eager to break their streak.
Out of the 15 participating teams, seven are ranked in the top 50 and 13 are ranked in the top 100 on the Golfweek/Sagarin weekly poll. The 15 competing schools - in order by rank - are UNLV (7), ASU, who will feature two teams (9), Texas Tech (21), South Carolina (25), Arizona (35), Stanford (46), Illinois (55), UCF (60), Arkansas (61), Colorado State (79), Kansas State (80), California (98), Oregon (116) and Penn State (135).
Since 1984, ASU has won this tournament 13 times, four times since 2000. Notable winners include Phil Mickelson (1991) and Todd Demsey (1995).
The first two rounds of the tournament will begin on April 8 with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start. The third round will commence on the following day at 7 a.m.
