Jan. 13, 2007
SAN DIEGO - Senior Markus Dickhardt (Marburg, Germany) and freshman Achim Ceban (Moscow, Russia) each posted victories on Saturday to lead the 49th-ranked San Diego State men's tennis team during the second day of action at the Aztec Invitational held at Aztec Tennis Center. SDSU faced Santa Clara for six singles matches, which featured individual play and no team scoring.
After suffering a defeat during the opening day of competition, Dickhardt rebounded with a straight-set triumph over the Broncos' Jan Macek, 6-3, 6-4. With the win, Dickhardt raised his overall record to 6-3 on the year.
Ceban, meanwhile, rallied from an early deficit in his clash with SCU's Robert Gallman, prevailing in a tough three-set battle, 6-7(5), 6-1, 7-5. After dropping a closely contested opening set, Ceban stormed back in the second two sets to escape with the win. With his performance, the Aztec freshman improved his season mark to 6-4.
Freshman Michael Beron (San Diego, Calif.) was also down one set in his showdown with the Broncos' Bobby Rasmussen. After knotting the score with a second-set comeback, Beron was unable to sustain the momentum in the third set and eventually dropped a 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 decision. The rest of the Scarlet and Black contingent experienced a similar fate, as Anthony Gomez, Robert Sabo and Billy Timu each suffered straight-set defeats in their respective matches.
The Aztec Invitational concludes on Sunday at Aztec Tennis Center with a 10 a.m. start.
