DURHAM, N.C. - The No. 50 San Diego State men's tennis team fell short against No. 54 Oregon, 4-0, in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend Duke Regional consolation match on Sunday afternoon.

SDSU (2-2, 1-0 MW) got off to a slow start in doubles play to play to begin the match, as the Aztecs' No. 1 duo of junior Thorsten Bertsch (Mannheim Germany) and Hunter Nicholas (Park City, Utah) lost Oregon's team of Kevin Farin and Robin Cambier, 6-3, before the Duck's unit of Joey Swaysland and Daan Maasland held off San Diego State's No. 2 squad of sophomore Freddy Gelbrich (Isernhagen, Germany) and freshman Hendrik Jebens (Stuttgart, Germany) in a tight match, 6-5 (7-4).

The Aztecs' No. 3 team of senior Juan Florez (Bogota, Colombia) and Milen Ianakiev (Elz, Germany) topped Oregon's team of Daniel Sardu and Jayson Amos, 6-2, but only after the Ducks clinched the doubles point.

Oregon (4-1) then won each of the first three matches in singles play to seal the victory. Maasland knocked off Gelbrich, 6-2, 6-3, in the No. 3 slot, Sardu topped Jebens, 6-4, 6-4, in No. 4 singles and Amos won a close match over Ianakiev in two tiebreakers, 6-5 (7-5), 6-5 (7-5), for the 4-0 dual match win.

The Aztecs' other three singles players found themselves in tight matches and were unable to finish. No. 69 Bertsch led the second set against Farin, 3-2, after dropping the first set, 5-6 (5-7). Nicholas led the second-set tiebreaker, 5-5 (2-0) after falling short in his first set, 5-6 (4-7) and freshman Maxi Boewer-Stelter won his first set over Joey Swaysland, 6-5 (7-4), and trailed in a close second set, 3-4.

This year's ITA Kick-Off Weekend was the first national tournament to use the new, experimental formats decided upon by the ITA Division Operating Committee. Men's teams were playing sets in all matches to six games, but with tiebreakers at 5-all and no-ad scoring. However, all third sets for singles were being played out unless the team match is decided.

After a week off, San Diego State returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 9, when it resumes Mountain West play on the road against Fresno State. The match is set to begin at noon PT.
