Men's Tennis Cruises To A Doubleheader Sweep On Sunday
Feb. 6, 2006
SAN DIEGO -
The San Diego State men's tennis team returned to its winning ways Sunday after defeating Cal Poly, 5-2, and UC San Diego, 7-0, in a doubleheader at Aztec Tennis Center. With the sweep, the 47th-ranked Aztecs improved their record to 3-1 on the year.
In the morning match against Cal Poly, SDSU grabbed the crucial doubles point after the tandem of Christian Groh and Robert Sabo emerged victorious along with the duo of Benedikt Stronk and Markus Dickhardt.
Dickhardt also got things rolling for the Aztecs in singles play after posting a straight-set win over 55th-ranked John Nguyen, 7-6, 6-0, at the No. 1 position. Groh, Stephan Timu and Anthony Gomez were also triumphant in their respective contests.
Later in the afternoon, SDSU took care of business against UCSD, who entered the day ranked 14th nationally in the latest ITA Division II poll. The Tritons proved to be no match for the Aztecs, however, as the scarlet and black shutout its cross-town foe.
Stronk and Dickhardt once again paced the Aztecs in doubles competition, while in singles play, Sabo and Billy Timu rebounded from earlier defeats to help SDSU complete the sweep.
The Aztecs will return to action with a showdown against defending national champion and No. 4 UCLA on Feb. 14, set to begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
