FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 53 San Diego State men's tennis team earned a hard-fought Mountain West road victory over Fresno State, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at Sierra Racquet Club.

With a fear of rain in the area, the two teams began the match with singles play. The Aztecs quickly fell behind, 2-0, when freshman Jonas Meinzer (Buggingen, Germany) dropped his match in No. 6 singles to Ethan Lopez, 6-1, 6-3, and senior Hunter Nicholas (Park City, Utah) fell to Sai Kartik Nakireddi, 6-3, 6-4, in No. 3 singles.

San Diego State (3-2, 2-0 MW) stormed back, however, behind a come-back victory from freshman Hendrik Jebens (Stuttgart, Germany) over John Darmstaedter in the No. 4 slot, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3, and No. 69 junior Thorsten Bertsch knocking off Sam MacNeil, 6-1, 7-6, in No. 1 singles play. Sophomore Freddy Gelbrich (Isernhagen, Germany) topped Eric Komati in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, but senior Juan Florez (Bogota, Colombia) fell short to Nikolas Papic, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, tying the match at 3-3 heading into doubles play.

The Aztecs' No. 1 duo of Bertsch and Nicholas began doubles action with a victory over MacNeil and Alexandros Georgios, 8-4, and Fresno State's No. 2 unit of Komati and Kartik Nakireddi held off Gelbrich and Jebens, 8-6, to even up doubles play.

But with the score all knotted up and the pressure on, SDSU's No. 3 team of Florez and Meinzer defeated Papic and Lopez, 8-5, to seal the match victory. It was San Diego State's 11th-straight MW regular season victory, and second-straight over Fresno State.

The Aztecs return to action next weekend when they travel to Las Vegas, Nev., for matches against BYU on Saturday, Feb. 15, and MW foe UNLV on Sunday, Feb. 16.
