FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 66 San Diego State Men's Tennis team lost its dual-match to No. 22 Auburn, 6-1, on a neutral court on Saturday at Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center in Fresno, Calif.
The Aztecs played three hard-fought doubles matches to begin the day, but were unable to come away with the doubles point. The team of sophomore Thorsten Bertsch and junior Hunter Nicolas lost to the No. 2-ranked Auburn duo of Andreas Mies and Daniel Cochran, while SDSU's No. 2 team of senior Derek Siddiqui and sophomore Andranik Khachatryan dropped a close one to Lucas Lopasso and Dennis Lengsfeld, 8-6. The Aztecs No. 3 unit of sophomore Spencer Simon and junior Shiva Sangwan was tied with Auburn's Joseph Van Dooren and Lukas Ollert, 7-7, but didn't finish once Auburn clinched the doubles point.
Siddiqui continued his strong play in singles action this dual season, knocking off Auburn's Daniel Cochrane, 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 2 slot, but it was SDSU's lone victory of the match. Junior Juan Florez fared well against Lopasso at No. 4, but lost in a third-set tiebreaker, 6-2, 2-6, 10-5. It was his first loss this season in singles action.
SDSU is now 4-3 (1-0 MW) this season, and returns to action on Feb. 14, when the Aztecs travel to Honolulu, Hawaii to face Hawai'i on Thursday and take on Pacific on Saturday.
